Why a shade code does not travel

Brands number their ranges however they like. The only thing two shades really share is a colour, so that is what gets compared here.

  • Every shade is a measured colour first Each swatch is converted to CIE L*a*b* and compared with CIEDE2000, the standard for how far apart two colours look to an eye.
  • The formula matters as much as the code One brand's NC30 in a stick and in a fluid are not the same colour. Both are listed separately for that reason.
  • Coverage and finish are still yours to pick A match tells you the colour is right. Whether it is matte, dewy, sheer or full is a separate decision, and the shade page links out to check.
